# The Deadliest Body of Water in America Is a Lake

You're standing on a beach in Indiana on a July afternoon. The water is flat. There's no salt, no tide, no fin cutting the surface. Kids are in up to their knees. It reads as completely safe, and that reading is the problem.

More than 1,350 people have drowned in the Great Lakes over the last fifteen years, and nearly half of them died in Lake Michigan.

That's roughly 650 people in a single lake since 2010, averaging somewhere in the mid-30s to low-50s every year. Its worst year on record was 2020, with 53 to 56 deaths.

For comparison, worldwide shark attacks kill a small handful of people annually. One lake in the American Midwest out-kills every shark in every ocean, every year, without close competition.

### The shape of the lake is the reason

Lake Michigan runs north to south. That single geographic fact does most of the killing.

Winds out of the north and northeast get a long, unobstructed run down the length of the lake, building waves and currents that pile up at the bottom end. Nearly half of all Lake Michigan drownings happen on that southern shore — the Chicago and Indiana lakefront, which is also where the population density is highest.

So you have the biggest waves arriving exactly where the most people are swimming. It's a bad piece of geometry, and no amount of signage fixes it.

### What actually kills people

Here's where I'd refine the story slightly, because the popular version overweights one thing.

Dave Benjamin, who runs the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, puts it at roughly a third of Great Lakes drownings being current-related. The other two-thirds are people getting into water over their heads without the swimming ability to get back.

That matters, because it means the danger isn't only an exotic hidden force. A large share of it is the ordinary, unglamorous fact that a lot of people cannot swim well and don't know it until the bottom drops away.

The currents are still real and still lethal. Rip currents, structural currents that run alongside piers and breakwalls, and channel currents all show up in the incident records — and the ones near piers are particularly dangerous, partly because piers look like the safest place to be. They're solid. They're built. They feel like infrastructure rather than water.

One correction worth knowing: **a rip current does not pull you under.** It carries you away from shore. People drown in them by exhausting themselves swimming against the pull.

### The three words that save you

The advice is simple enough to remember while frightened, which is the entire point.

**Flip. Float. Follow.**

Flip onto your back. Float — you conserve energy and keep your airway clear. Then follow the safest path back to shore, swimming to the side rather than fighting straight against the current.

The instinct to swim hard toward the beach is what kills. The current is stronger than you and it doesn't get tired.

### My take

What gets me about this story is how much of the danger comes from the word "lake."

We carry a mental category for oceans that includes danger. Rip currents, undertow, sharks, lifeguards, red flags — the ocean arrives pre-loaded with caution. "Lake" arrives pre-loaded with the opposite: swimming holes, cottages, calm water, childhood.

Lake Michigan is 22,000 square miles. You cannot see across it. It has surf, sandbars, breaking waves and structural currents, and most of its beaches have nobody watching. Every physical property that makes an ocean beach dangerous is present. The only thing missing is the salt — and the salt is the part that was helping you float.

The name is doing damage that no warning sign can undo. If it were called the Michigan Sea, I suspect a meaningful number of those 650 people would still be here.

*If you swim there: check the beach flag and the National Weather Service forecast before you go in, stay off piers in high surf, and don't swim where nobody is watching. Flip, float, follow.*
