# The Fish That Turned Its Own Eye Muscles Into a Battery

#### You Won't See It Until You Step On It — Then You Get Venom and 50 Volts at Once

Most dangerous animals give you something to react to. A shape. A movement. A sound.

The stargazer gives you sand.

It buries its entire body in the seabed and leaves only three things above the surface: its eyes, its nostrils, and the top edge of its mouth. Everything else is under the sediment. From above — which is where you'd be — there is nothing to see. Just seabed, with two small dark points in it that don't look like anything.

And it's looking straight up. Permanently. That's where the name comes from.

##### It rebuilt its own face for the job

Nearly everything about this fish has been reorganised around being buried.

The eyes migrated to the top of the head and can push outward slightly, like periscopes, so it can see over the sand without moving. The mouth rotated upward into a vertical slit that opens like a trapdoor directly into the water column above. The wide pectoral fins work as shovels — it can dig itself in and vanish in seconds.

Then there's breathing, which is the detail I find most impressive. Most fish take water in through the mouth. A stargazer can't, because its mouth is a weapon pointed at the ceiling and it's full of sand. So it breathes through its nostrils instead — and those nostrils are lined with fleshy comb-shaped fringes that filter out sand grains on the way in. Its lips carry the same fringing for the same reason.

It didn't just learn to hide in sand. It rebuilt its respiratory system around the problem.

##### Weapon one: the spines

Behind the gill covers, sitting just above the pectoral fins, are two large venomous spines. They're grooved to channel venom, backed by venom glands, and in some species they can be folded flat when not in use.

The sting is not a minor injury. It causes excruciating pain and serious wounds, and while the great majority of cases aren't fatal, a small number of deaths have been recorded — particularly from the Atlantic stargazer, *Uranoscopus scaber*. The standard treatment is hot water immersion, typically 30 to 90 minutes, until the pain eases.

Here's a strange footnote: nobody knows much about the venom itself. Attempts to extract it for laboratory study have repeatedly failed. One of the more dangerous fish venoms in shallow water remains poorly characterised, largely because the fish won't cooperate.

##### Weapon two: electricity from the eye muscles

This is the part that borders on absurd.

Stargazers in the genus *Astroscopus* have a pair of electric organs mounted vertically inside the head, behind the eyes. They can discharge up to **50 volts**.

And that organ isn't a modified swim bladder or a specialised tail structure like in other electric fish. In *Astroscopus*, it evolved directly from **eye muscles** — the muscles that would normally aim the eyeball. In *Uranoscopus*, a separate genus, it evolved instead from sonic muscles, the ones used to make sound.

Two closely related genera, in the same family, independently repurposed two completely different muscle groups into batteries. Across the fish world, electricity has been invented from scratch at least eight separate times.

Fifty volts won't kill you. It will absolutely convince you to let go of the fish.

##### The thing that makes it genuinely unique

Every other electric fish you've heard of — the electric eel, the elephantnose, the torpedo ray — uses electricity for two jobs. It fires, and it also *senses*. They have electroreceptors, and they navigate and hunt by reading distortions in their own electric field. In muddy water, that's how they see.

Stargazers don't have them. At all.

They are the only electric fish that can generate a field but cannot perceive one. They can fire the gun; they can't use the scope. The electricity is purely for hunting and defence, and nothing else.

Which means this fish evolved a battery in its skull and never got the sense organ that would make it useful for anything but hitting things. It's electrically blind. It just lies there, watching upward with ordinary eyes, waiting for something to swim over the top.

##### And people eat them

In several countries stargazers are a delicacy. The venom is protein-based and breaks down with heat, so a cooked one is harmless.

At market they're often sold with the electric organ already cut out.

I love this detail more than almost anything else in marine biology. A fishmonger somewhere has "remove the battery" as a routine, unremarkable step in prepping dinner.

##### What I actually think

We tend to rank ocean animals by how frightening they look. The stargazer looks like a grumpy face pressed into wet sand, and it is one of the most heavily armed things in shallow water: chemical weapon, electrical weapon, and a mouth that opens like a floor hatch.

But what stays with me isn't the arsenal. It's how badly evolution wanted this fish buried. The eyes moved. The mouth rotated. The nostrils grew sand filters. The fins became shovels. Every single part of it was bent toward one strategy — lie still, look up, wait.

Sharks got speed. Octopuses got intelligence. The stargazer got patience, and then spent the rest of its evolutionary budget on making sure that whatever finally showed up regretted it.
