# These Sea Creatures Have Abilities That Seem Impossible

#### One of These Animals Cuts Off Its Own Head — And Regrows the Entire Body From It

Every so often you read about an animal and your first reaction isn't "wow." It's "no, that's not how anything works."

These are six of those. None of them are exaggerated for effect. I've deliberately picked abilities that break a rule we assume is unbreakable — you can't survive losing your heart, you can't make fire underwater, you can't age backwards.

They can.

##### 1\. The sea slug that decapitates itself

In 2021, a Japanese researcher watching sea slugs in a lab noticed something she assumed was a death. The head of an *Elysia* slug had detached from its body and was moving around by itself.

It wasn't dying. It was rebooting.

The severed head crawls away, starts eating algae within hours, and over the following weeks regrows an entire new body — including a new heart. The old body stays behind, still moving for a while, and then decomposes.

Think about what this actually requires. It's not regrowing a limb. It is regrowing a torso, a digestive system and a functioning heart, from the neck up, while feeding itself the whole time. The leading theory is parasite removal: if your body is infested beyond saving, discard the body.

That's not a survival strategy. That's a factory reset.

##### 2\. The jellyfish that ages backwards

*Turritopsis dohrnii* is about the size of your little fingernail and has quietly solved the problem every human civilisation has thrown money at.

Jellyfish normally have a one-way life cycle: polyp stuck to a rock, then free-swimming medusa, then death. When *Turritopsis* is starved, injured or stressed, it doesn't die. It sinks, collapses into a blob, and reverts to the polyp stage — then grows up all over again.

Its cells transform into completely different cell types to do it, a process called transdifferentiation. Muscle becomes nerve. Nerve becomes gut.

There is no known limit to how many times it can do this. It can still be eaten, crushed or infected — it isn't invulnerable. But it doesn't have to die of being old. It is, as far as we can tell, biologically immortal.

##### 3\. The shrimp that makes fire underwater

The pistol shrimp is a few centimetres long and carries one oversized claw. When it snaps that claw shut, it fires a jet of water fast enough to make the sea itself vaporise.

The jet drops the local pressure so low that seawater flashes into vapour — a cavitation bubble. Then the surrounding ocean rushes back in from every direction at once, compressing the trapped gas so fast the heat can't escape.

The collapse produces a brief spike to somewhere around 4,700°C — not far off the surface temperature of the sun (estimates vary by study; some report considerably higher). It also emits a flash of light. Sound producing light is called sonoluminescence, and researchers nicknamed this version *shrimpoluminescence*.

The snap registers around 218 decibels. Colonies of these shrimp are loud enough to interfere with sonar.

A shrimp. Making a plasma flash. In water. To stun a fish.

##### 4\. The fish with clear blood

Antarctic icefish live in water below freezing, and they did something no other vertebrate on Earth has done: they threw away haemoglobin.

They have no red blood cells. Their blood is colourless. Their gills are white. Oxygen simply dissolves in the plasma, which works only because very cold water holds a lot of oxygen and they've compensated with enormous hearts, huge blood volume and scaleless skin that absorbs oxygen directly.

They also produce antifreeze glycoproteins that bind to ice crystals and stop them growing, which is why they don't freeze solid in water that should kill them.

Every biology textbook says vertebrates need haemoglobin to carry oxygen. One family of fish read that and opted out.

##### 5\. The animal that can turn liquid

Sea cucumbers can change the physical state of their own body wall almost instantly, from firm to nearly liquid and back again. The tissue is called mutable collagenous tissue, and the animal controls it directly with its nervous system — loosening the bonds between collagen fibres on command.

A sea cucumber can pour itself through a crack narrower than its own body and re-solidify on the other side.

And when that isn't enough, it escalates: it violently expels its internal organs out of its own body, either to entangle a predator or to leave it something to eat while the cucumber crawls away. It grows the organs back over the following weeks.

Two abilities we associate entirely with science fiction, in an animal most people think of as a lump on the sand.

##### 6\. The one that drowns you in slime

A hagfish under attack releases a tiny amount of exudate from glands along its body — well under a teaspoon.

In under half a second, that material expands into litres of dense fibrous slime. The expansion is on the order of ten thousandfold. It works because the glands contain coiled protein threads, each many centimetres long, packed into microscopic cells; contact with seawater unpacks them all at once into a mesh that traps water.

For a shark, this is catastrophic. The slime floods the gills. Predators recorded attacking hagfish are frequently seen gagging and fleeing within seconds.

The hagfish then ties itself into a knot and slides the knot along its own body to scrape itself clean.

##### What I actually take from this list

I notice something that connects all six, and it's not "the ocean is weird."

Every one of these is a solution to a problem we also have, arrived at by an animal with no brain worth mentioning. Infested with parasites? Discard the body. Getting old? Don't. Can't move oxygen in freezing water? Stop using oxygen carriers. Need a weapon but you're four centimetres long? Weaponise physics.

We tend to think of evolution as slow refinement — a beak gets slightly longer, a coat gets slightly thicker. These aren't refinements. These are animals that ran into a wall and went straight through it, using a mechanism nothing else on the planet uses.

And that's the part that stays with me. Not that they're impossible. That they're clearly *possible* — and only one lineage in the entire history of life ever found each one.
